Why I think white beds are so dreamy

By: Adline A. Ghani

Though I live in warm and sunny Malaysia, I actually love the shabby chic and country cottage sort of look for my home’s interior, and so, in the bedroom, nothing would make my day more than a wonderful white bed. White beds have actually been enjoying record sales in recent years due to its timelessness. A neutral colour, white has always been seen as a clean and modern-looking shade, lending itself well to any bedroom setting.

Think about it, white matches virtually any theme, including country, romantic, cottage, modern, classic, modern, minimialism, industrial… you name it! White beds, coupled with white bed linen and pillows make veritable blank canvasses for your bedroom. So you see, no matter how you change the look of your bedroom from then on, you won’t find it hard to fir your white bed in it!

Think white beds are boring? Think again! These days white beds come in a variety of finishes, from wood, metal to leather! As I thumb through home decoration magazines featuring white beds, it becomes obvious that the right kind of white bed will actually set off a bedroom filled with antique finds quite dramatically, in addition to serving as a focal point to the room.

White beds look best, perhaps, against a light and airy palette, which works wonderfully in opening up the smallest of spaces and bringing cohesion into large rooms that are filled with furnishings. With white, you can hardly get a sense of heaviness or clutter. Instead, you can cue peace and tranquility. To me, it’s amazing how a coat of white paint can transform a space into a restful nook.

Patterns, textures and shades can also play a multi-faceted role in an all-white bedroom, featuring a handsome white bed. For example, you can mix and match checks and plaids with floral patterns just as you would any other colour, and make use of textured textiles of various weaves. And how about using a range of white on whites? From cream to off-white, the possibilities are endless! Of course, if you do get bored of an all-white room, you can always add a splash of colour with an animal printed ottoman or zesty red cushions. You could also choose to enrich your space with an earth-tones and soft grays. Versatile, classic, modern and cool, it can only be a dreamy white bed for me!
